C01 Somewhere a River,

for string orchestra by Patrice Connelly A$66 ($60 ex GST)

Background

Do you ever really know a river?

Its twists and turns,

now shallow and calm, lapping at the shore,

now deep, hiding rocks and fallen branches.

Where will the river end?

I wrote this piece around New Year 2016/17, inspired by documentaries of beautiful rivers and gorges, and their many hidden wonders, some lovely and some treacherous. Rivers can hide all sorts of things: crocodiles, trout, carp and other fish and creatures of all sizes, sunken boats, dead bodies, jagged rocks, even buried treasure.

Roughly grade 4 standard. More suitable for community orchestra or high school orchestra.

In performance, aim for a relaxed pace. Give the double bass Ab octaves time to breathe, as it's not the easiest phrase for them. Slight variations in tempo can be incorporated (whicih can aid in overcoming any technical difficulties) just as the flow of a river can vary. And enjoy the piece.
